Requirements for tayammum and how it is done

Back to Chapter 2

1. Intention.

2. Use of wholesome soil: This means any object that "has the nature of soil." This includes sand, stones, marble, granite, gypsum and some jurists include wood (as it is from trees). However, in extreme situations and under duress such items as dusty clothes are acceptable. Objects as metals, plastic and glass are excluded.

3. One starts by saying: Bismilla hir rahmanir rahim, In the name of God, the most gracious, and the most merciful.

4. Then one strikes the soil with his hands, blows out the dust and then lightly strokes his face and his hands to the wrists. One stroke of the soil is sufficient. It is sunnah that one blows off dust from his hands so as not to make his face and hands dusty.

5. Tayammum is a symbolic act of purification and does not mean that dust is used instead of water.

6. Tayammum is a concession for the believers to be able to keep timely performance of salat.
