Legal basis for tayammum

1. The Quran says:

If you are ill or are travelling or have just satisfied a want of nature or have cohabited with a woman, and can find no water, then resort to wholesome soil passing (therewith) lightly over your face and hands. The Quran: 4.43

2. In the Prophet's tradition, "All of earth has been made for me and my nation, as a place for prayer and means of purification."5
