OBLIGATION

Back to Chapter 3

1. Islam: Prayer is not required from non-Muslims.

There is no compulsion in religion.
The Quran: 2:256

2. Adulthood: Puberty is the age at which prayer becomes an obligation. However to develop the discipline and the commitment to establish prayers for lifetime, the Prophet (pbuh) recommended that parents and guardians order their children to pray at the age of seven and to reprimand them if they do not pray by the age of ten.7

3. Sanity: is a condition for responsibility. Insanity precludes obligation. The Prophet (pbuh) said that "there is no obligation upon three: The one who is asleep till he wakes up, the child till he reaches puberty and the insane till he regains sanity."8
