The obligatory acts of ablution

Back to Chapter 2

1. Intention: This is an act of the heart and does not need to be expressed verbally. A person who takes a shower or bathes without the intention of performing ablution is not ritually pure.

2. Washing the whole face with water.

3. Washing the forearms up to and including the elbows.

4. Wiping (and not just touching) the head with a wet hand. The Prophet (pbuh) wiped his head in three different ways: wiping all the head from the top of the head backwards to the nape of the neck, wiping over the turban (head covering) and wiping the front part of the head and over the turban.

5. Washing the feet up to the ankles.

6. Doing the above in proper sequence.

Oh you who believe, whenever you are about to pray, wash your face and your hands (arms) up to the elbows and wipe your head with water and wash your feet up to the ankles. The Quran: 5:6
