EID PRAYER

Back to Chapter 8

This is a stressed sunnah, prayed on the end of Ramadan Eid and on the Eid of Sacrifice. It is performed as two rak`as. Its time is when the sun is three meters above the horizon till it reaches the meridian. Everyone is required to go to the prayer including children and even menstruating women (the latter group is to witness but not to join the prayer). It is recommended that one performs ghusl (bath or shower) and wears his or her best clothes. It is preferred that the prayer be held outside the mosque but it can still be performed at the mosque. It is sunnah to recite Takbir supplications from the time of arrival to the place of prayer till the start of the prayer. There is no adhan or iqamah for this prayer. After the opening Takbir and before reciting Al-Fatiha in the first rak`a, seven more Takbirs are made. In the second rak`a, after the regular Takbir when standing up from sujood (prostration), five more Takbirs are made. One raises both hands to the ears as each one of these Takbirs is being made. The Eid khutba is a sunnah. It is delivered after the prayer with the imam standing.
