The Islamic Center expresses shock and horror at the unfolding crisis in the Darfur region of Sudan. It is estimated that over 1 million people have been internally displaced, and over 30,000 people have already been killed. There are widespread reports of rape, torture, and murder of the civilians of Darfur, by local militias called the "Janjaweed." Over forty mosques have been destroyed and countless Qu'rans desecrated. Allegations have been made that the Sudanese government has backed and financed the Janjaweed. We demand the government of Sudan immediately take swift action to stop this criminal activity, and put members of the Janjaweed on trial for their brutal actions. If Sudan does not immediately take steps the solve the situation we urge the United States Government and the United Nations to put diplomatic, and economic pressure against the government Sudan. We also urge African and Islamic nations to immediately deploy peace keepers to the region of Darfur.
